Inlay / Onlay – Modern filling of the teeth

The cavity fillings are made in dentistry using various dental fillings and methods. At present, the aim is to ensure that the dental fillings are as aesthetic as possible and that they do not differ from the natural teeth of the patients. Among the modern fillings are listed among others. Inlay and Onlay. What are they?

Inlay and Onlay

According to the dictionary definition, inlay is a type of filling defect in dentistry, otherwise the crown insert that covers the chewing surfaces and nodules of the nodules excluding their peaks. The latter fill the onlay cartridge.

The advantage of such fillings is their aesthetics, which makes them look like natural teeth. In minimally invasive way they can definitely improve the aesthetics of our smile because they can be used as veneers, not just fillings. Therefore, they are used to:

-closing the gap between the teeth,
brightening the color of the teeth,
leveling and displacement,
Correcting the setting of individual teeth.

What are Inlay and Onlay doing?

Inlay or onlay can be made of different materials in the prosthetics lab, on the basis of patient impressions. Most of them are made of porcelain, because it has universal properties.

The type of onlay / inlay depends on the thickness of the patient's tooth and on the strength that affects the tooth during chewing and chewing. Other fillings are recommended for the front teeth and others for the rear teeth. This dentist decides what fill to wear in the dentition of the patient.

Porcelain jars are the most modern solution dentists use today. Onlay porcelain or porcelain inlay is made by the indirect method, which means that the defect is modeled in the laboratory, based on the impression taken. The technician can ideally reproduce the anatomical shape of the tooth and its tangent points. Porcelain used in this process is cast or pressurized under pressure to achieve the best results.

Composite inlay or composite onlay is made from the toughest materials, with a low degree of abrasion.

Another type of inlay / onlay are gold-plated electrogalvanic inserts. This is a special variation of ceramic inserts - galwanoinlay. The onlay / inlay model is performed on the root of the rebuilt tooth, covered with gold, and then ceramic veneer.

Porcelain filling

Inlaye porcelain, like porcelain onlay is an adhesive ceramic restoration, called BPR, or Bonded Porcelain Restoration. It allows to replenish lost tooth tissue by using proper porcelain filling. Provides an alternative to large, unstable composite fillings and artificial crowns. Inlay porcelain designed and made individually in the lab will be glued to the tooth and will effectively rebuild it, with the restoration of the correct contact between the teeth. The dental technician will ensure that the inlay or porcelain onlay reinforces the tooth, much more than the commonly used composite filling. It protects against caries and gingivitis because it perfectly fills the tooth. The mechanical properties of porcelain over time make the risk of damage less than that of composite or amalgam fillings. Bonding material and dental work is a special cement.

Inlay and onlay have many advantages: they are durable, resistant to abrasion and aesthetic, so we use them more and more often in our dental surgeries.
