Tooth decay - what is it actually?
Caries is a disease process that involves the softening of tooth enamel by the action of acids that arise when the plaque forming bacteria break down the sugars present in the oral cavity. In other words, caries is an infectious bacterial disease that progressively attacks the hard tissues of the teeth. Teeth with decay over time is degraded, resulting in cavities that require dental treatment and fill with suitable composite material. Untreated tooth decay leads to complete loss of teeth.
Causes of caries
Tooth decay is a disease caused by caries bacteria that grow and form plaque. Carious lesions arise when carbohydrate-containing foods accumulate in the mouth, mainly on interdental surfaces, which are not removed during daily brushing or riveting. Sugars become a nutrient for plaque bacteria. In the development process they produce acidic intermediates that effectively damage the enamel of our teeth and contribute to the formation of defects.
The primary cause of caries is poor oral hygiene or lack of it, and consumption of sweet, sticky foods and beverages. The more sweet things we eat, the more acid in our mouth results in the formation and development of caries.
It is worth emphasizing that the sugar left in the mouth, that is, the remnants of carbohydrate foods, connects with plaque, damages and weakens the enamel, while increasing the susceptibility of tooth to caries.
You do not have to refuse to eat beloved sweets, but you need to know how to care for oral hygiene and prevent caries.
The first characteristic symptom of caries is the appearance of yellowish, soft rash, or plaque. It is made up of food residues, mainly sugars and bacteria that feed on it. Plaque can be effectively removed by thorough brushing and filing of the teeth. If we do not do this, plaque will start to form on the plaque. Only dentist can remove plaque.
Patients feel the development of caries, because when the caries bacteria penetrate into the teeth and begin to destroy everything they encounter along the way, they will approach the sensitive and severely damaged pulp. This can be felt as a severe toothache or hypersensitivity to the thermal factors, mainly warm and cold drinks or meals.
Caries - how to prevent it?
Caries prevention involves changing the diet to a healthier one. What we eat can increase the risk of tooth decay. Consuming large amounts of simple sugars and disaccharides, which quickly convert to acids, accelerates the development of caries. It is important to eat as little candy as possible and to exclude colored and sweet drinks from diets that cause the pH level in the mouth to drop.
The next step for effective tooth decay is to properly brush your teeth - at least in the morning and in the evening, after about 3 minutes a day. If there are still discolouration and cavities in the mouth that may indicate tooth decay, you should report to the dentist as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the disease and exclude the caries outbreak.
